Monkey: Journey to the West

Monkey: Journey to the West is an adaptation for stage of Wu Cheng’en’s ‘Journey to the West’ [one of the four great classical novels of Chinese literature, published during the Ming Dynasty cerca 1590]. More about that and the story can be found here. The original idea for the adaptation came from Jean-Luc Choplin, head of the Chatelet Theatre in Paris, and then was put together by the Chinese actor and director Chen Shi-zheng in conjunction with Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewitt [the creators of the virtual band ‘Gorillaz’]

It’s going to be playing at the Royal Opera House in London from 23-26 July 2008, for seven shows only. I’m looking forward to it alot, the Royal Opera House being somewhere I’ve always wanted to go.

You can get tickets and more information from the official website

Following on from my previous post, here’s the Gorillaz featuring Roots Manuva with backing vocals by Martina Topley-Bird. ‘All Alone’ is from ‘Demon Days’ [2005]. She’s worked with lots of great artists including Tricky [on his debut Maxinquaye – in fact at one point I think they used to be and item], Diplo and David Holmes.

Martina Topley-Bird’s solo stuff is well worth checking out as well, have a listen to Valentine below and check her out on myspace here
